Kelly Schrader found her way to the yoga mat in 2002 while working through family illnesses and caretaking for her mother. It took no longer than a week and she had found her sanctuary. For Kelly, the yoga room is the place where you can go, all your other worries fade for 90 minutes, and you can focus on your inner strength, both mental and physical. She attended and completed the Bikram Yoga Teacher Training Certification program in Los Angeles, California, in Spring 2003. Since then she has been teaching and sharing this life-changing yoga series with as many students as possible.
Prior to attending the Bikram Yoga training, Kelly attended The University of Oregon and graduated with degrees in Advertising and Organizational Development. She later attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and received an accreditation as a Holistic Health Counselor through Columbia University. Most recently she received an additional certification from The Institute for the Psychology of Eating in Boulder, Colorado, and added Certified Eating Psychology Counselor to her professional credentials.
As Kelly worked her way through the corporate world she maintained her yoga practice and has taught from Sacramento to New York to Boston. In 2007 Kelly moved back to Northern California to pursue her dream of one day owning her own Bikram studio. She settled in Truckee where she managed the Bikram Yoga studio there from 2007 to 2009, and founded her Integrative Nutritional Counseling Practice--EVOLVE. Subsequently, Kelly went on to also manage the Bikram Yoga studio in Elk Grove.
While in Truckee, Kelly continued other non-yoga passions and explored new ones. When not on the yoga mat you can find her on the ski slopes or hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail. In 2008 Kelly was running her third marathon in Sacramento and walked off the course on mile 18. It was determined that she had broken through the cartilage in her right hip while also receiving a hairline fracture to her femur. She headed straight to the yoga room, her sanctuary, and fell in love with the yoga in a whole new way. She would spend time in the yoga room each day, taking care of herself, often times practicing in a chair or propped up against the back wall. It took time and patience. Kelly believes the yoga is a major reason her hip injury continues to heal and why she has avoided surgery.
In the Spring of 2010 Kelly was attracted to Bikram Yoga Grass Valley/Nevada City because of the wonderful and dedicated clientele, the positive community feeling, the studio ambiance and the beautiful area that surrounds it. As a practitioner, teacher and studio owner/director, her goal is to provide an atmosphere where you are challenged and given the confidence and motivation to achieve the results you desire. She truly believes that everyone and anyone can benefit from this practice and is here to support you every step of the way. She is looking forward to watching the studio grow and continuing to build on its foundation, where others can find their sanctuary too.
Justine Guiney has been teaching Bikram Yoga since the Fall of 2002. She grew up in San Diego CA., where dance, equestrian sports, and surfing were her main passions and sources of exercise. She attended the University of California at Santa Cruz for college and attained a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Environmental Studies. Through her college years Justine grew more interested in yoga as a way to relieve stress and increase strength and balance. Once she found Bikram yoga she knew she was hooked, and decided to pursue this new passion further.
In 2002, Justine graduated college and went right on to achieve her certification in Bikram Yoga. She started teaching in San Diego, and in 2004 she was approached to teach in Bali, Indonesia on a yoga retreat. This was the beginning of an eight month travel course around the world, teaching Bikram yoga in five different countries including Australia, Ireland, Spain, Bali, and Thailand.
After traveling and experiencing many different cultures as well as Bikram Yoga studios around the world, Justine came back to the United States to settle down. She found through her travels that she immensely enjoys working with people, primarily in a yoga setting, and decided to return to school for an advanced degree in psychology.
Justine found a good program in Sacramento for a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, as well as the very welcoming Bikram studio in Grass Valley. She is now happily teaching lots of yoga, as well as attending classes in Sacramento. Justine brings her passion for yoga and the healing and helping of others to her teaching.
Jeannette was born and raised in Eastern Washington where she intensively studied ballet as a company member of Regional Dance America, later becoming a professional ballerina with the Sacramento Ballet. In 2003 Jeannette completed her Bikram Yoga Teacher Certification and has religiously practiced and taught Bikram Yoga since. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Art & Design at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, CA in 2006. Jeannette has taught Bikram Yoga throughout the United States and Internationally in cities like San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Reno, New Orleans, and Budapest, just to name a few.
I fumbled through my first Bikram Yoga class in 2001. It was summer in Key West, Florida. Walking into a room filled with roaring space heaters and men in speedos, I thought I must have walked into some strange parallel universe. After my first class I decided I’d never go back, then inexplicably found myself trying again a week later. I remember telling the instructor that I didn’t want her to think she broke me. Soon I was standing on one leg and locking my knee at random during my workday, drawing looks of bewilderment and concern from coworkers passing by with a cigarette in one hand and a donut in the other. I needed to escape middle management.
I attended teacher training in L.A. in Spring 2003. My dream at the time was to live in my island paradise teaching stimulating yoga classes and engaging in meaningful conversations about literature as a clerk at the local used bookstore. And this I did. But soon enough stimulation became as hard to find as people who read literature. I left Key West after 12 years and spent the next several years trying on different cities and towns to find the right fit. With California calling my name, I made my way to Truckee and finally to Nevada City.
Teaching yoga has made me a stronger, more confident person. Practicing yoga has made me brave. The challenge of showing up, of being present, of facing yourself in the mirror on good days and bad, makes the challenge of living your life less daunting. Bikram Yoga shows you what you’re made of and it helps you like what you see. I like what I see here.
Meg took her first Bikram class on a whim while in high school & practiced sporadically through her college years. It wasn't until she moved to the frigid cold town of Truckee that she became an avid enthusiast of the hot room & the therapeutic benefits, both physical & mental. Although the bitter cold was initially the motivating factor to get her into the room, she soon became hooked to the relaxation & rejuvenation she found in the 90 minute Bikram series. After several years of dedicated practice between life's twists & turns, she found herself back in her hometown of beautiful Nevada City. She soon fell in love with the BYGVNC Studio & the local yoga community. She attended teacher training in the Fall of 2014 & is on her way to spread her love for the yoga through teaching.
Meg graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Global Studies. Although she wasn't sure how to apply her degree in the job market, her major did instill a passion for travel, language, & culture. In a sense, she found a means to implement her studies through a global practice called Bikram Yoga! Outside of her practice, Meg enjoys the great outdoors, her boxer puppy, & good music - especially live shows. She feels blessed to be surrounded by amazing friends & family, & to be a part of the wonderfully diverse BYGVNC community.
Michelle Phillips grew up in Grass Valley, after graduating high school she moved to Eureka to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Biology with a Minor in Botany. Each summer of her college years she returned home to work for the Forest Service and realized that once she graduated she wanted to return home to be closer to her family.
Michelle began practicing Yoga in search of stress relief, weight loss and time to focus on herself. Her love of the Bikram practice continues to grow with each class! Michelle and her husband Barry have owned and operated their own business for the past 15 years, and made the decision to sell their business in 2014. The timing was perfect for Michelle to attend her teacher training at the True You Hot Yoga training beginning in September 2014. Michelle graduated from her training January 24, 2015 and is excited to join the Bikram Yoga Grass Valley Nevada City Studio.
Outside of the yoga room, Michelle and her family enjoy many out door activities, from running to snow skiing and everything in between. Michelle has also developed a passion for nutrition and gluten free baking, which began when her youngest child was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2011. She is continuing to study nutrition and wellness, with a great desire to learn all she can.
